A Brief History of Colonialism

Performed at the Colonial Shopping Center in Williamstown, Massachusetts, the physical impact of the artist’s body with a mural depicting the Betsy Ross Flag on the side of The UPS Store delivers an embodied critique of America’s enduring colonial legacy. Following the performance presentation at a MASS MoCA Open Studio event, the local Town Hall Committee ordered the mural to be painted over, a response emblematic of the tendency within institutions to suppress historical narratives of national identity rather than confront uncomfortable truths.
